Uses:
It is used for retracting the soft tissues after elevating the periosteum in a
mastoidectomy, in a thyrotomy, or in a laryngo-fissure. The pressure of retraction can
cause the arrest of haemorrhage.
It is also called Jansen’s Self-retaining Haemostatic Mastoid Retractor.
The instrument has 3 or 4 small hooks in each blade which can be held apart by working the screw at
the base of the instrument.
It is called self-retracting because no assistance is required to hold the instrument after application.
